Sex Trafficking and Sexual Violence in Canada’s Resource Extraction Industry – A Review of Evidence, Policy, and Recommendations

This report, prepared for EmpowerMen by anti-trafficking research consultant Allison McKnight, is part of our ongoing efforts to find solutions to the issues of sex trafficking and sexual violence alongside partners in the business community, particularly the extraction and mining sectors.

The report aims to provide a summary of existing evidence and an outline of recommendations that have been generated by Indigenous women, female employees, industry representatives, service providers, policy makers, and academics. Addressing the risks associated with sexual violence and sex trafficking requires immediate, coordinated action with industry, government, service providers, and Indigenous communities all having a role to play in preventing violence and ensuring accountability.

The EmpowerMen Project engages men and boys to prevent the sexual exploitation and trafficking of women, girls and gender-diverse individuals. We believe that men play an important role in opposing the culture of exploitation and increasing the safety, respect, and wellbeing of everyone.
